Tradition has it that in Benin it was once customary to behead the vanquished kings and offer their heads to the Oba. When the son of a vanquished sovereign ascended the throne, the Oba sent him a bronze replica of his father’s head as a warning to pay due respect.
This is a beautiful scale head a little more than 1:1. This one is rather thin walled which would support it possibly being older than estimated. Possibly as old as 17th Century.
