A completely unique item.
As far as I am aware I am the only person who makes art in this way. I studied painting and drawing, and then textile design at art school. My process is a fusion of these disciplines that has evolved over the last 40 years.
My favourite subjects are storms, reflections in water, skies and the landscape in which I live and work.
We spent 2 weeks on a boat on the Canal du Midi – a 240 km long canal in Southern France. It was uniquely flanked in the 1830’s by 42,000 Plane trees on either side; to give shade to travellers by boat from the relentless sun, and to stabilise the canal banks. Built on the orders of the Sun King, Louis XIV, the Canal du Midi is listed by the UN as one of the ???most remarkable feats of civil engineering??? but also a natural work of art. Originally named the Canal Royal en Languedoc, it was renamed by French revolutionaries to the Canal du Midi in 1789 and it is now listed as a Unesco World Heritage site. It is the most relaxing way to spend a holiday! The canal winds slowly through the Minervois and Corbieres wine regions where you can moor up in the evening under the shade of the beautiful Plane trees and enjoy a canal side restaurant dish of the day, washed down with some local wines.
Multiple layers (46 in all!) of watercolour pencil were applied to both the front and reverse of a translucent fabric, and then blended with a fine brush, giving a 3 dimensional quality to the finished watercolour. I then use machine embroidery to highlight and enhance areas of the piece – literally drawing again as if the needle was a pencil, which gives further depth to the completed image.
Image size (height x width) = 15.5cm x 27cm
Mounted size (height x width) = 30cm x 40cm
The piece is supplied with a signed Certificate of Authenticity
My pieces are supplied mounted with quality mounting board of a colour that best shows the work (in this case ivory). The mount is standard sized so you can choose your own off the shelf frame.
