A completely unique item.
As far as I am aware I am the only person who makes art in this way. I studied painting and drawing, and then textile design at art school. My process is a fusion of these disciplines that has evolved over the last 40 years.
My favourite subjects are storms, reflections in water, skies and the landscape in which I live and work.
Multiple layers (37) of watercolour pencil were applied to both the front and reverse of a translucent fabric, and then blended with a fine brush, giving a 3 dimensional quality to the finished watercolour. I then use machine embroidery to highlight and enhance areas of the piece – literally drawing again as if the needle was a pencil, which gives further depth to the completed image.
The Massif du Luberon, near Avignon, boasts some of the best lavender fields in Provence. Located in the department of Vaucluse, this is a beautiful area to explore, with lavender fields, pretty hilltop villages, and the famous S??nanque Abbey. On market days woman sit and fill bags from huge wicker baskets of lavender. The smell is incredible! My grandmother was educated in a convent near this area. She always wore lavender water perfume and had little home made bags of lavender hanging in her wardrobe.
