A completely unique item.
As far as I am aware I am the only person who makes art in this way. I studied painting and drawing, and then textile design at art school. My process is a fusion of these disciplines that has evolved over the last 40 years.
My favourite subjects are storms, reflections in water, skies and the landscape in which I live and work.
Le Mont-Saint-Michel consists of leucogranite which solidified from an underground intrusion of molten magma about 525 million years ago. According to a legend, the archangel Michael appeared in 708 to Aubert of Avranches, the bishop of Avranches, and instructed him to build a church on the rocky islet. In the 11th century, an Italian William of Volpiano, an Italian architect, was chosen by Richard II, Duke of Normandy, to be the building contractor. He designed the Romanesque church of the abbey. Many underground crypts and chapels had to be built to compensate for its weight; these formed the basis for the supportive upward structure that can be seen today. Today Mont Saint-Michel is seen as a building of Romanesque architecture. Mont Saint-Michel and its bay are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. It is visited by more than 3 million people each year.
For me it is an architectural wonder which seems to soar skywards from the rock. Near to Christmas each year they illuminate the whole place with candles and strings of lights and play music. A visit at this time is a magical way to get into the Christmas spirit!
Multiple layers (21 in all!) of watercolour pencil were applied to both the front and reverse of a translucent fabric, and then blended with a fine brush, giving a 3 dimensional quality to the finished watercolour. I then use machine embroidery to highlight and enhance areas of the piece – literally drawing again as if the needle was a pencil, which gives further depth to the completed image.
Image size (height x width) = 12cm x 17cm
Mounted size (height x width) = 21cm x 30cm
The piece is supplied with a signed Certificate of Authenticity
My pieces are supplied mounted with quality mounting board of a colour that best shows the work (in this case ivory). The mount is standard sized so you can choose your own off the shelf frame.
