A little bit of AI. A lot of real vintage.

At European Vintage Emporium, we sell real vintage and antique items. The item you see in our photographs is the actual item you will receive.

From 2026 on new listings we have been using AI to create one or two additional images showing the actual item in a typical environment or setting where you might expect to find it.

We do this simply to help you imagine how a piece might look in your home, office, shop, collection or another period-appropriate setting.

So, what is AI actually doing?

AI is used to create or add the environment around the item.

For example, a vintage lamp might be shown in a period-style sitting room, or an antique object might be placed into a setting where such an item could typically have been found.

The item itself is the real item we have photographed.

We do not use AI to create a replacement item and pass it off as the real thing.

How many AI images are there?

Usually, just one or two images in a listing will use an AI-generated environment.

The majority of the photographs in our listings are simply photographs of the actual item, with no AI-generated background or environment added just a clear background.

This means you can see the item itself from several different angles and examine its condition, details and appearance as it really is.

What about perspective?

There is one small quirk with AI-generated environments: sometimes AI gets a little carried away with its sense of perspective!

An item may occasionally appear slightly larger, smaller or differently positioned than it would be in reality.

For this reason, please always use the stated measurements when judging the size of an item.

Where appropriate, we also photograph our EVE mugs alongside items to give you a genuine physical reference for scale. These mugs are actual mugs placed next to the actual item when photographed — they are not AI-generated.

How can I tell which images use AI?

Any image with a background is usually created with AI assistance. Items that do not use AI will have a clear white background.

If you are unsure, please assume that the AI image is there to provide inspiration and context, rather than an exact representation of how the item will look in a particular room.

The plain photographs are the important ones when assessing the actual item.

What you are actually buying

This is perhaps the most important point:

You are buying the actual vintage or antique item shown in the listing.

AI does not change what you receive.

The condition, construction, materials, colour, dimensions, signs of age and other physical characteristics should always be judged from the photographs and written description of the actual item.

The AI-generated images are simply another way for us to say:

“This is what we think this lovely old thing might look like in its natural habitat.”

And sometimes, frankly, the AI gets the habitat slightly wrong!

Why do we use AI at all?

We believe AI can be a useful creative tool when it is used honestly and responsibly.

Vintage and antique objects can be difficult to visualise when photographed against a plain background. Showing an actual piece in a suggested environment can help you understand its character and imagine how you might use or display it yourself.

But we don’t want AI to get in the way of the thing that matters most:

the real object.

That’s why we use AI sparingly and continue to provide plenty of straightforward photographs of the actual item.

An AI-generated setting for context.

We think that’s the best of both worlds.
