Please read the following very carefully – This is a project boat – needing a lot of work.
IMPORTANT COST CONSIDERATION: Be aware the harbour will be dredged in the new year. The boat will need to be removed before then but with arrangement with the harbour master can be put back in afterwards. We have got a quote from the local boat yard of 450-750 Euros for removal to their yard. This will likely be less if being stored on the hard at the harbour.
We took Renegade on about five years ago on a whim having previously owned a slightly smaller Macwester back in the UK. We understood it was a project then and it is very much still a project now. This boat is a long way away from being ready to sail although it could be up for motoring after some work (see below). We only managed to get to the boat for one day last year when I carried out an engine service (still starts on the turn of the key – video available on request of engine running) and we have only managed a few days so far this year. I am getting nowhere with it and it’s time to pass on the project to someone else who has the time on their hands, who appreciates these old vessels and can get her sailing again.
The boat has a rear mizzen mast. The boom is inside the boat.
The boat has a rear cabin which can sleep two at a squeeze. Two berths up front. One in the main cabin and a half berth for a little one. So potentially six berths but it would be tight. Head space is good at about 180 cm in the main cabin.
When we purchased this we were told it was new in 1974 but further research suggest it is in fact more likely to be the mark 1 Wight which was built up until 1972. Link to specs here: https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/wight-macwester-mki-31/
There is a lot of information on the Internet about these boats and it still has a thriving owners club in the UK.
The fibreglass hulls on these are built to last and withstand a beating unlike the majority of modern sailing boats.
I have regularly serviced the engine which runs well.
The boat was out of the water two years ago for anti fouling and new anodes and a bit of a tidy up. Since then it has sat lonely on it’s berth at Portbail marina in our special disabled space which is right at the bottom of the ramp (note – there is no right of way onto the marina for members of the public but the boat can be seen quite clearly from the top of the ramp). If the harbour master (Kevin) is in his office and you wanted to have a closer look you may be able to seek approval there.
Old electrical equipment onboard which is all untested. Radar, fish finder, radio etc.
I was told by the previous owner that the engine was replaced in the early 2000’s. It has 400 hours on the counter but the counter is not turning on the engine panel. Other dials like oil pressure and temperature are functional.
It is quite a trip for us to accommodate viewings so we will collate these to a weekend when we have seriously interested parties lined up. It would be great if you could take a peek first to confirm your interest before asking us for a viewing. We won’t be taking you for a trip (see below) but we can show you the insides and the engine running (batteries are old and need replacing)
Jobs I had lined up (but there are many more on the to do list):
New sheets/ropes throughout – most of the current ones are rotten
Source a decent set of secondhand sails (there are some with the boat that you may be able to get another season out of – we never fitted them)
Fit a new companionway hatch (I did get one of the two done)
Annual engine service due later this year
Fit a new strake bar
Carry on with updating electical systems
Paint inside – replace headlining
Refit windows which leak a bit
Refit hatchway window – leaking a little
Replace batteries – which are well past their use by date
Update solar system – still working
Replace cushions inside
Rudder position gauge not working
New curtains – or tint windows
Things I have done:
New bench pillows outside
Started work on a new fuse box / control panel – electrics are a nightmare and ideally need completely re-doing
Replaced manual bilge
Added a battery bilge
Rear hatchway replaced
Replaced rotten flooring
Tidied up anti-slip paint but this is allready tired and needs a touch up
Cleared out half of the lockers from what the previous owner left behind…
Potentially major issues that we have not yet had the time to investigate:
The boat was taken out last year and driven around the marina without issue but has sat on it’s berth since. Every time we have got down we have run the engine and emptied the bilges. On our last visit I noticed the powersteering was stiff and that the rudder was not moving when steering – this may just be some power steering fluid needed, a service for the power steering (which was updated a few years before we had the boat) or something more serious of course.
When turning the engine power up I noticed what felt like the throttle cable break. This may be just a new cable needing fitting or of course something a little more serious with the gearbox. I will investigate next time we are up. The engine still accelerates and decelerates it just didn’t seem to put out any significant power. A pin on the propellor or drive shaft may also be the issue…
These issues have been taken into account with our pricing.
Portbail is a great little town and the marina is very friendly. Annual fees were just short of 1800 Euros last year. Which includes internet, shower block, electricity and water right next to the boat. I wouldn’t get two months in the UK for that! We had no issues transferring the mooring to us after a probationary period but I cannot guarantee that. The mooring fees are paid up until the end of the year but cannot be transferred to the new owner.
Why are we selling? Other than just not having the time to give Renegade what she needs we are going with something that needs a little less work before we can go sailing. I’m an amputee (one leg) and accessing the parts of the boat I need to for anything other than basic servicing is difficult (potentially broken throttle cable for example). We will be going with something with easier engine and systems accessibility.
As I receive questions I will update the listing with responses as I have likely forgot to mention a lot. I am keen to not waste our time or yours so please ask any questions you may have.
If the listing is visible the item is still available.
Please carefully consider the amount of work required. You will not be going out fishing or sailing in this one for a while! Although you could spend some pleasant overnights in the marina whilst carrying out work. It has been our tranquil holiday home on the water for the last five years (when we could get there).
A 500 Euro deposit will secure the boat and take it off the market.
We will consider a part exchange for a sailing dinghy or motorboat on a trailer if it helps someone out who is looking to scale up. We are also always on the look out for stock; vintage, antiques, anything interesting. What have you got?!
Contact email – once you have read the listing details above: mail@euviem.com or mail@europeanvintageemporium.com (ideally both)
We specialise in often unique vintage and antique items. While we strive to ensure the safety and quality of our products we source and offer for sale, please be aware that vintage and antique items may not meet current safety standards and regulations. They were generally created before such regulations existed.
We also supply damaged and broken items. Prop houses, movie studios and theme parks are some of our biggest customers. Please carefully read item descriptions to avoid any disappointment at your end. If one of our items is priced below typical market prices it will likely be overly damaged in some way.
All of our items are sold as spares / repairs / props and/or collectibles. They are generally intended for decorative purposes only. They may contain materials or components that may not be suitable for use by children or in certain environments. Customers are advised to handle these items with care and to keep them out of reach of children.
New stock listed after 13th December 2024 will contain extra specific safety information in the listing description in relation to the product offered for sale. This is to comply with European GPSR regulations. Items listed before this date will not contain this extra information but please feel free to contact us with any safety or usage queries.
Everything we sell is on 30 day approval. If it doesn’t work for you as expected just return it for a full refund. We appreciate shopping online is sometimes difficult. We do a lot of it! We are often surprised by what we receive. You can usually avoid any disappointment by fully reading product descriptions and checking all listing photos where we strive to detail any defects our vintage and antique items may have. Any less than great feedback we receive is nearly always as a result of customers not reading product descriptions or looking at all photos.
European Vintage Emporium is not responsible for any injury or damage resulting from the use or misuse of our products. By purchasing from European Vintage Emporium, you acknowledge and agree to these terms and conditions.
If you have any safety queries or issues with our vintage/antique items you should message us on Etsy or contact our “GPSR representative” at mail@euviem.com or write to;

The large majority of our stock appears on our website but we always have more listing to do! There is a chance that we may have different items and quantities than those that are listed here immediately available from stock.
We also keep tabs on a lot of outlets in our local areas and also have quite a network of colleagues throughout Western Europe, so we may be able to help source your special requirements. If you would like us to keep an eye out for something or source an item just let us know what you are after and your budget and we will let you know promptly if we can help.
We operate a love it, or return it, no quibble, full refund policy. We appreciate that things sometimes do not fit in or suit quite as expected, and as a result we are happy to provide refunds due to the very nature of online shopping. Buyers will be responsible for return transit costs. To qualify simply let us know you wish to return an item within thirty days of receipt.
Returns are expensive for us and for you! They are rarely requested but when they are it is nearly always as a result of customers not checking item descriptions, sizes or all photos in a listing. Please carefully check item descriptions and photos before purchasing any items from us to avoid any disappointment.
We can only create lay-away accounts or take 20% reservation deposits from customers on our website. Etsy and Ebay do not have the facilty to do this easily.
We are surprised by the high number of customers who fail to return to complete their purchase even after they have paid a 20% deposit. Please make sure you really want the item before enquiring about making a deposit. Items can be reserved for three months after a 20% non-fundable deposit has been made.
Get in touch if you would like to make a 20% NON-REFUNDABLE reservation payment.
We are based in Lower Normandy in France. All of our stock is dispatched from here. Personal collection can be arranged from our buying office or shop in Lower Normandy with 24 hours notice. Ask for details.
Please check listing descriptions for sizes. Most listings have a mug in one of the pictures to give you a relative idea of size. The weight of items is often shown in our listings but some older listings may not contain this information. If you require further measurements or weights just send us a message and we will get back to you promptly.
We ship everywhere! We have shipped tens of thousands of items worldwide over the decades and have plenty of shipping experience. Postage costs will be displayed as you approach checkout. We give significant automatic postage discounts on multiple item orders at checkout with customers only paying postage for the heaviest item they buy.
Postage and packing costs on our own website are often subsidised by us and cheaper than postage charges in our shops on Etsy and Ebay where we have to pay seller fees. Postage prices on our other third party selling venues reflect the actual cost of sending items and do not include multiple item purchase postage discounts on heavier items. It’s always cheaper to shop and ship with us here!
Postage discounts are automatically applied to multiple item orders. You only pay a postage charge for the heaviest single item you buy. For example; if you buy ten items, you will only pay a single postage charge for the heaviest single item. See postage costs for your selected items by proceeding through the checkout process.
Standard postage services usually take 5-15 working days to reach international destinations. Express services usually take 5-10 working days.
Items are usually dispatched within one working day. They typically arrive with customers 3-15 working days (up to 3 weeks) after dispatch depending on your location and the delivery service selected at checkout.
We cannot guarantee any shipping times as we rely on assorted third parties for transit and cross border services. We cannot avoid customs delays for example. All items are sent fully tracked and insured against loss and breakage in transit.
We use the French Post Office (La Poste) who work in conjunction with Postal services in your country to deliver parcels. For example USPS in the USA and Parcelforce in the UK. We can work with other couriers like UPS and DHL but these tend to be at least twice the shipping price.
We can supply personal courier services for urgently required items or large bulk orders in Western Europe. Contact us for details.
Please see our trading policies for more detailed information on shipping or get in touch if you have a question.
Multiple item purchases have postage discounts applied at checkout with customers only paying postage fees for the heaviest item they purchase. The rest are sent free. For example if you buy ten items you only pay postage for the heaviest single item.
