Lanterns have been used for centuries to provide portable light, evolving from simple oil lamps to more elaborate decorative fixtures. This particular style, with its metal frame and glass panels, became popular during periods of revivalist design, such as Neoclassicism and later revivals, often used for both interior and exterior lighting.
Bronze, with its durability and ability to be cast into intricate shapes, was a favored material for decorative lighting during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The patina developed over time adds to its aesthetic appeal and historical character, making such pieces sought after by collectors and interior designers.
